Mireille Delmas-Marty

If you don’t yet know the writings of Mireille Delmas-Marty, you should. She is one of the great thinkers of our time on issues concerning law and society. Some of the works of Professor Delmas-Marty are available in English, including a book with Cambridge University Press and a recent article in the Journal of International Criminal Justice. She has a great website, and is disseminating her courses at the Collège de France on the internet. See: http://www.college-de-france.fr/default/EN/all/int_dro/index.htm

Mireille and I (translator of the texts you mention and contributor to IntLawGrrls, a blog your students might want to follow) both thank you for your very kind advertisement. One of her more recent books will be available in English this fall or early next year under the name Ordering Pluralism (Hart Publishing).

I agree that MDM is one of the innovative and challenging thinkers in the philosophy of human rights. As I write I am listening to a podcast from France Culture, a debate between MDM and Marcel Gauchet on the crunch issue of the universality of human rights. I attended the recent Anniversary Celebration session in the Human Rights Council in Geneva. This question was both the explicit and implicit theme in most of the contributions to the session. I like MDM's idea that human rights law essentially establishes a process towards the adoption of values that are universal, even if practices remain culturally determined.
